The Helix Nebula ( NGC 7293) is located in the constellation of Aquarius, and discovered by astronomer Kar Ludwig Harding in 1824. The striking beautiful planetary nebula is referred to as the “Eye of God” due to its striking resemblance to an eye.
One of the most ancient symbols of antiquity is the Egyptian Eye of Horus, the Egyptian Sky god. From whom we get the word ‘hours’. The Egyptian name for Horus is Wadjet, wedjat, or udjat as it also spelled.
Eye of Horus
The Eye of Horus, is similar to another ancient and popular symbol of an eye, the ‘Nazar Boncugu’ also known as the ‘Evil Eye’ said to have originated in Turkey and extremely popular in Greece, Middle Eastern and Asian countries. Contrary to its name both are a symbol of protection and worn or hung around a vicinity to ward off evil, envy and negativity. In ancient Egyptian religion the wedjet was a talisman symbolising well- being and healing. The protective presence of God.
The Egyptians were amongst the most advanced stargazer’s and preservers of astronomical and constellational starlore. Their ancient knowledge and wisdom is being rediscovered in our modern era. They knew about the 26,000 year Precession of the Equinoxes and it has also been discovered that the three Pyramids of Giza were aligned to the Constellation of Orion’s belt. Could it also be encoded in the hieroglyphic symbol of the Wedjet a message and knowledge of the existence of the Helix Nebula? We may never know the answer but it is interesting to wonder…
